Turkmenistan is the second largest Central Asian country but a sizeable part of its territory is quite inhospitable. For enjoying the real Turkmen experience, tourists should visit the oasis towns of Jerbent and Darvaza in the midst of the Karakum Desert where one can stay in round tents called yurts, among the nomadic people and observe their customs, traditions and food habits. Other tourist attractions include the Kugitang Nature Reserve that includes the Kugitang Mountain Range and the Karlyuk Caves. Shopping at the Tolkuchka Bazaar, especially for carpets is a must for all tourists.
